Observe Behaviors, not Attitudes!
An except from “Leading with Purpose: 30 Empowering Tips to Transform Your Organization” by Nathan R Mitchell
I was in the corporate sector for over a decade with a Fortune 50 company, so I know all to well how corporations, in many cases, focus on improving attitude in the workplace. That’s one of the major reasons for annual conferences. Corporations will bring everyone together for an entire week that is jam-packed with meetings, in an effort to inform, inspire, and engage the team for another year.
The problem is the impact from these meetings is short-lived. The passion, excitement, and improvement in employee morale and attitude quickly diminish. That’s why organizations and leaders should be focusing on behaviors, not on attitudes.
In reality, a member of your team can have a great attitude; yet still have a negative influence on others in your organization. You see, it’s impossible to witness “attitudes.” Attitudes are internal. Behaviors are observable.
Focus on improving behavior, not attitude, and you will experience success.
