Shafer…Power! An Entrepreneurial Story With a Twist

Posted on | June 19, 2024 | No Comments

Welcome to Shafer…Power! Ours is a unique story with a bit of a twist. It goes something like this…

We are the Shafer family – Owen, Malia, Kathleen and Paul – and Shafer Power is a phrase we use when our family goes exploring. For example, whenever the four of us head out on an adventure, I like to yell, “Shaferrrrr” and the kids will respond, “Power!” If they don’t do it with enough oomph, I get to be the annoying dad who does it again. “Shaferrrrr…Power!” It works every time. Whenever I break out this battle cry, the kids know we’re about to have some serious fun.

Speaking of fun, I’ve decided we need more of it. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like a kid’s life has become too serious. At the time I am writing this, our six-year-old kindergarten son is already doing 20-30 minutes of homework per day. Yes, I know China is knocking on our door, but if our kids aren’t allowed to be kids, they’ll never build the confidence and creativity they need to survive and thrive in this world.

This being said, I’ve started a little family project so we can have some fun and use more of our creativity. Over the last several months I’ve been thinking about a few entrepreneurial projects and the kids are I have decided to give them a try. So far, we’ve hosted a thrift sale, a coffee stand and made and sold homemade chocolate bars. And we’ll be holding our biggest event to date - a taco wagon - at the end of this month. We’ve also got several more AdVentures in the pipeline and are just getting started.

I should note our goals for the project are to have some fun, learn something, share in our success and earn some spare change. We’d love it if you’d join in the dialogue by leaving a comment at our blog at www.shaferpower.com. All together now, Shafer…Power!

When is a good age to introduce kids to entrepreneurism? Do you think our children’s educational experience will be different from ours? What will the job market look like in 10 years? 20 years?
