The Real Value in Mentorship

Simply put, it’s really challenging to improve yourself as a business owner and leader when you have no one to follow but yourself. At the end of the day, this is one of the most challenging things for those who choose to enter the world of entrepreneurship. In the traditional workplace, as leaders and managers, we typically answer to someone that is both responsible for holding us accountable, and also somewhat responsible for our growth and development as a member of the team. As a business owner, not only are you responsible for the performance and development of those you lead in your business, you are also responsible for growing and developing yourself, which can be problematic and challenging.

This is why it’s so important for business owners and leaders to have a mentor or a coach that they work with regularly to keep them on track. When it comes to taking the next step in your own personal growth and development, without help, you can only grow as much as YOU personally can. So, what now?

For this week’s blog, I would like to give you some recommendations and/or advice on what to look for when seeking out a good mentor/coach.

1. Seek someone who not only talks the talk, but also walks the walk.
2. Find someone that really cares, is willing to spend time with you, and wants to pour into your life.
3. Seek someone who has been doing what they are doing for a long time.
4. Seek out someone who possesses wisdom. Wisdom is knowing what to do with what you know.
5. Lastly, a good mentor provides support. Look for someone who is willing to lead from the head and the heart. It’s important!
